OX-5 #4

Got the camshaft and bearings cleaned up.  Came out nice like the crankshaft.  I still need to magneflux everything yet, but wanted to clean/polish first to make sure no machining was required.

Made an interesting discovery - I finally figured out the exact mfg. date of this engine.  I got a copy of the original airworthiness certificate application and it shows the mfg. date for this engine is 1/19/19.  Great information, since even the Curtiss museum could not tell me this!

Camshaft, timing gear, and bearings

Close-up of cam bearings.  The bearings are a split
aluminum housing.

If there are any OX-5 people following this, I need some info:  I'm planning on using the original Berling magneto.  In fact I have it apart now for overhaul, and have the coil out for rewind.  I want a more modern back-up just in case I have issues with the Berling.  I have an opportunity to get a Scintilla GN8-D1.  It's an 8-cylinder mag, but I'm finding very little info about it.  Does anyone know if this mag has been successfully put on an OX-5?

Made more progress on the lower LH wing this past week.  Wing walk area is mostly done, and have trailing edge ribs glued on.  Will be putting the leading edge ribs on this week.
